Circle Cycle Internal Combustion Engine

Circle Cycle orbital, non-reciprocating internal combustion engine

We haven't looked at any new internal combustion engines for a while and I just spotted this one, the Circle Cycle engine. It's described as an orbital, non-reciprocating internal combustion engine, having pistons and cylinders and able to run on a variety of combustible liquids or gasses. It has no engine block, no crankshaft or connecting rods, no separate flywheel, no intake or exhaust valves, no water pump and no radiator or any of the hardware usually associated with these items.

Circle Cycle Engine - operational prototype

Circle Cycle Engine - operational prototype

The engine uses direct injection of fuel into the center of the combustion chamber and it can be configured to run as either spark ignition or diesel. Potential applications, according to the website, are pretty much what you would expect, which is anything you would use any other internal combustion engine for.

The company has been developing the engine for five years and believes it is at the stage where it can be taken to the next step, which is design and production for specific applications, so they are looking to sell or license the patent or enter into a joint venture with someone who can carry it forward.

The only part of the design I question is the gearing necessary to keep the cylinders and pistons in alignment while the large geared wheels are turning. Any hiccup in operation or broken tooth on one of the gears could result in catastrophic failure, but they may have addressed that somewhere in the design and it may be more apparent if we were to see the actual engine up close.

There are a lot of photos, drawings and animations on the site plus a great deal more explanation of the concept. Is it better, more efficient or in some way an improvement on what we already have? I can't say, but it's pretty ingenious and cool to watch in operation, just the sort of thing any gearhead should enjoy.

Monday Kickstart ? Phoenix SX 2012

By Brendan Lutes and Donn Maeda

The second round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series  went off without a hitch last weekend inside Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona. And with a live broadcast on SPEED, you likely already saw all the on-track action as it went down. What you didn?t see, though, was what went on behind-the-scenes and inside the pits. So without wasting anymore of your time, here is this week?s Monday Kickstart.

Lucas Oil/Troy Lee Designs/Honda rider Cole Seely carried the red plate - designating the series points leader - into Phoenix. "It looks good," joked Seely. "It matches my Honda perfectly. It's really cool to be the first rider of the season to earn the red plate. I hope to have it many more times throughout the series."

Ryan Morais reported that his transition to the 450 class is going well, and that he feels comfortable aboard the larger bike and the with the longer 20-lap main events. "It might have been tough if I didn't practice 20-lappers all winter long," joked Mo. "But everything is all new for me: a new class, a new bike, a new team and a new brand." Last week, Morais reported that his Yamaha YZ450F actually ran too cool at Anaheim 1, and that the radiators would be partially blocked off for Phoenix. And how about the largest single improvement made to the YZ450F? "When we rotated the engine 2mm forward in the chassis, that really made a difference in the way the bike cornered," said Morais. "The vague feeling that the front end had before was totally eliminated." Lightspeed and Dubach Racing offer kits to rotate the engine in the chassis.

John Knowles from Scott Sports shows off the new Trey Canard signature Hustle goggle. "Trey played a huge role in the look of the new goggle," said Knowles. "He chose the Hustle frame because he likes the adjustability of the fit system. And if anyone is curious, he likes setting number three." To learn more about the TC41 Hustle goggle, visit www.scott-sports.com

Now that's a serious tripod...

Quote of the weekend? Rockstar Suzuki's Jason Anderson: "I was looking through a magazine, and there was a photo of me sitting there with my long hair all in my face, and I thought, 'That's no good. I can't be looking like that,' so I cut my hair off and started tucking in my jersey."

Supercross Champion Ryan Villopoto was wearing a new version of the Alpinestars Bionic neck brace, that had a lot more raw carbon fiber exposed.

John and Kelly Louch are two behind the scenes players in motocross and Supercross. John is a highly regarded personal trainer who currently works with Austin Stroupe and Nico Izzi of the Star/Valli/Rockstar Yamaha team, while Kelly runs The Connection, the modeling agency responsible for supplying the Monster Energy girls.

From 2009 to 2011, Ryan Villopoto penned a guest editorial column in TransWorld Motocross titled, "Big Game." Nice to see that the name is still alive and well!

Michael Willard Interview

The last time we checked in with Ohio native Michael Williard was back in 2010 when he was a member of the rejuvenated Honda of Troy team.  Now back on KTM, and racing Arenacross, Williard is hoping to earn an AMA Championship to go with his two Canadian National Motocross Championships.  Williard had been leading much of the 2012 Arenacross East Lites series until a technicality set him back ? which is exactly when we caught up with him. Racer X: Michael, let?s hear about your Arenacross series to date?
Michael Williard:
Well, it started out great, but then got a bit confusing.  I was leading the Arenacross East Lites series, but then also decided to try some of the Arenacross class races ? as the KTM contingency is so good.  I wasn?t paying close enough attention, and got into the top ten in the Arenacross class which meant that I could not compete in the Arenacross Lites class.  So, I decided to sit out at Friday night?s race in Grand Rapids, MI to drop out of the top ten in the Arenacross points so I could get back into the Arenacross Lites series.  Unfortunately that also dropped me back to third in Arenacross Lites points, but I am pushing to get back into first.  Hopefully I can pull off this championship. Not only for myself but for my sponsors like Moose, Dragon Fuels, 100%, Mandingo Pickles, Cycra, my mom and dad, and everyone else who supports me.  It would be awesome to get KTM a championship in Arenacross as they have not really had much going on in Arenacross before this year.  They really stepped up with contingency this year, and it definitely helps out us privateers with getting to the races.  So, I really want to shoot for this Arenacross Lites East Championship, and then when the series moves out West I have about four rounds to get into the top ten in the Arenacross class ? and get a top ten number for next year.

I have never seen more orange bikes in Arenacross than I have this year.
Like I said, KTM has stepped it up big time with their contingency program, and it?s a very good deal for us privateers.  Getting on a KTM, and going out and making enough money to get to the next race, and then pay some of your bills has been great ? I couldn?t ask for anything more.  Actually I think that KTM may have underestimated the number of riders that would be on their bikes in Arenacross.  I imagine that they have been pretty surprised once we got a couple of rounds in Arenacross in, and they see how much money that they were paying out. I?ve ridden KTMs pretty much my whole life, except for a couple years on a Honda, and it has been a very good bike.

Speaking of KTM, didn?t you qualify for a supercross on a 125 two stroke a couple years ago?
Yeah, that was in 2007 when I qualified.  Back then I was doing the Canadian Nationals, and during the winter I got hooked up with Casey Lytle, and Michael Sleeter who were test riders for KTM at the time.  Sleeter kind of took me under his wing, and got me hooked up to do some testing, and just helping out in general too.  I think it was Kurt Nicoll who was the Team Manager at the time; but all the guys there helped me out.  I wasn?t really a full-on test rider, but it was pretty cool, and that experience helped me see how a real race team works.  When I was with KTM those three years I got two Canadian National Championships, and then qualified for the 2007 Seattle Supercross in 2007 on the 125.  There was some type of Two Stroke Challenge going on, and a couple of other guys raced two strokes too.  It was cool because I had a chance to make a lot of money with everyone pitching in from Mototalk.  A couple of the KTM mechanics built this ?badass? KTM 125, that to this day is probably one of the coolest bikes that I have ever raced.  KTM got a bunch of publicity, and all the guys there were really pumped ? and it made me feel good to be on the last two strokes that ever qualified for a supercross.

You?ve competed in so many forms of dirt bike racing; supercross, Outdoor Motocross, and Canadian Motocross - what drew you to AMA Arenacross?
Well, I grew up in Ohio, and so many of the Arenacross guys are from Ohio that it?s cool to get out, and battle with your friends.  My mom also works in the Arenacross series with sign-up, my brother is with the track crew, and even my dad helps out in the pits.  So it?s kind of a family thing, and it?s nice to be here with them.  Arenacross is an easy thing for me to do right now, and I?m making decent money.

I often hear from other riders that Arenacross has a friendly vibe to it; yet I would think that it would be the opposite with all the bar banging going on.
Yeah, there is some bar banging going on, but I think that due to the pits being so confined, and tight, that you are forced to interact.  It can be somewhat frustrating to be pitting right next to the guy that took you out, but you learn to handle it.  You have to be aggressive, and be willing to bang bars in Arenacross, but on the other hand you have to be smart, not always the fastest guy wins.  Arenacross is just so different than supercross, that?s why guys like [Jeff] Gibson, Chad Johnson, [Josh] Demuth, and [Tyler] Bowers are so good ? they have been doing it a while.  It never surprises me at all if a successful motocross or supercross rider comes into Arenacross, and doesn?t me the main their first time out.

What plans do you have after the Arenacross series ends?
No big plans right now. I started a family a while ago, and I am very devoted to them.  As I earlier said, Arenacross is kind of easy for me to do right now.  It?s quick and easy, I?m with family and friends, and it?s not too much travel.  I can make a little money to help me out for the summer.  I want to take some time off, and watch my kids grow.  I know a lot of racers that miss out on a lot of family stuff, and I want to keep mine together and want be in my kids? lives a lot.  So just Arenacross right now, and then spend the rest of the year at home with my family.

Michael, that sounds like a good point to wrap things up. Is there anything that you want to add?
I would like to thank my fiancée Tiffany Flowers, and my two kids Cruz who is 18 months old, and Carson who is 3 months old?.without them I could not do this.  Also a big thanks to my mom and dad, and brother, they are here very weekend helping me unload and load.  Other people like Cycra, Al Albiker, AG Motorsports, Dragon Racing Fuels, 100%, all my buddies from Michigan at Mandingo Pickles, FMF, and PR2 Suspension.  These people have always been very loyal to me. No matter what I?ll always use their stuff, and really appreciate their help!

KTM Canada adds National #2 Dusty Klatt to powerful MX1 Team

From KTM Canada

Just weeks after the announcement that National #1 Colton Facciotti would join the orange squad, KTM Canada is excited to report the signing of National #2 Dusty Klatt. With this 1-2 duo headlining the KTM MX1 squad, the team looks forward to battling for moto wins and ultimately working hard to earn KTM Canada their first Canadian MX1 Championship.

Dusty is a proven champion in Canada. ?I feel he has what it takes to win again in 2012. I am sure at round #1 Dusty will be ready to put that 450 SX-F on the podium,? said KTM Racing Manager Andy White.

As a two-time Canadian National MX1 Champion and a former two-time MX2 West title holder, Klatt knows what it takes to win. With a new bike and a new set of challenges ahead, the Campbell River, BC native is more motivated than ever to reach the top step of the podium this season.

?I?m excited about riding and learning a new bike and I?m looking forward to all the challenges ahead of me,? said Klatt. ?It?s going to be fun. It?s like getting a fresh start. I am looking forward to testing and getting the bike dialed in and ready for the season.?

Klatt?s signing reinforces KTM Canada?s continued commitment to racing, and ultimately, to winning. With a MX1 championship team now assembled, the entire KTM squad is ready to put in the hard work needed to compete at the highest level this summer.

Ryan Dungey Goes Wire-to-Wire to Give KTM Inaugural Supercross Class Win

Ryan Dungey Goes Wire-to-Wire to Give KTM Inaugural Supercross Class Win in Phoenix
Dean Wilson Races to Supercross Lites Victory

PHOENIX (January 14, 2012) ? A huge crowd of 49,236 fans filled Chase Field on Saturday night for the second race of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, season. In just two races together, the new relationship between Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., and Red Bull KTM has proven to be fruitful as the former champion captured his first win of the season, and KTM?s first Supercross Class victory ever, with a dominant wire-to-wire effort. In the Western Regional Supercross Lites Class, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki?s Dean Wilson, of Menifee, Calif., prevailed with a similarly-convincing performance.

Dungey capitalized on a good start out of the gate in the 20-lap Supercross Class Main Event to grab the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot and checked out on the field. Behind him, Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX?s Davi Millsaps, of Murrieta, Calif., and Monster Energy Kawasaki?s Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash., assumed their spots at the front of the field, with both TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray Honda?s Chad Reed, of Dade City, Fla., and Toyota/Muscle Milk/JGRMX?s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., mired in the field following mid-pack starts.

The wild action of the night began when Millsaps went down in the track?s sand section on the opening lap, collecting Villopoto and relegating both riders to the tail end of the field. Villopoto?s misfortune allowed both Reed and Stewart to move forward, crossing the line 8th and 13th, respectively.

From there, Reed, Stewart, and Villopoto began climbing their way through the field, with Reed and Stewart doing so together. Just as Stewart made his way past Reed in his continued forward progression, he went down in the same section as Villopoto on Lap 7, falling outside the top 10. Villopoto eventually made his way around Reed and set his sights on the top five, slowly picking his way through the field and bringing the crowd to its feet.

In the end, Dungey took the checkers by over six seconds for his second Supercross Class win in Phoenix.

?This was a big step in right direction for KTM,? said Dungey. ?They?ve been behind me the whole way and believed in me. We?ve come a long way since the off-season, but there?s still a lot of racing to go. I got off to a great start and (moved) into the lead early, which made it nice on myself. If it wasn?t for all these people (at KTM) working their butts off every week, this wouldn?t happen, so I owe this all to them.?

Monster Energy Kawasaki?s Jake Weimer, of Rupert, Idaho, finished second for his first career Supercross Class podium, while Villopoto passed most of the field and fought his way into third to salvage his points lead.

?It was a tough night,? said Villopoto. ?Davi (Millsaps) went down in front of me in the sand and I went right into him. It happened on first lap, and when that happens, you have your work cut out (for you). There?s 20 laps to do it, so you?ve got to make quick work of it. The bike was working great though. I salvaged a lot of points tonight, so it was good.?

Reed brought home a fifth-place finish, while Stewart soldiered on to finish eighth. Dungey and Villopoto currently have a share of the points lead, and both will adorn their bikes with the red number plate next weekend, signifying the current rider in control of the championship.

In the Supercross Lites Class, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki?s Tyla Rattray, of Wildomar, Calif., captured the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot, but Wilson worked his way into the lead on the exit of the second corner. Once out front, Wilson continued to pull away from his competitors and rebound from a sixth-place effort one week ago.

?This feels great,? exclaimed Wilson. ?Last weekend just wasn?t me. I think I was too confident coming in. It just means so much to get this win. The track was really slippery and required a lot of throttle control. This class is unbelievable and it?s not going to be easy (to win), but I want to be in the championship and I?m going to try my best.?

Red Bull KTM?s Marvin Musquin, of Murrieta, Calif., garnered his first career Monster Energy Supercross podium in second, while Rattray held on for third, moving into the Western Regional Supercross Lites Class championship points lead.

The 2012 Monster Energy Supercross season continues next Saturday, January 21, from Los Angeles, with the third race of the season inside Dodger Stadium. The festivities begin at 7 p.m. PT.

2012 Desert Racing Season Opener Laughlin

January 14, 2012 by

Today SCORE opened the off-road racing season with round 1 in Laughlin.

This race course is known for its harshness despite the very short laps. Things started out unscheduled for Jimmy Knuckles and Robby Pierce as they both yard sales after one of the large and high speed jumps alongside the Laughlin High School.

All drivers and co-drievrs are reported ok.

Also noteworthy is one incident involving Trophy Truck #16 of Cameron Steele. The transmission let go and exploded shooting parts into the driver compartment and injuring co-driver Cody Stuart. Cody was sent via helicopter into a Las Vegas hospital for treatment. To follow Cody?s recovery check our forum discussions HERE.

Sunday will be another day of racing and hopefully with less carnage.
