2012 Dakar: Yamaha's Rodrigues Takes 3rd

2012 Dakar Rally

For the past 11 years, the Dakar Rally has become synonymous with KTM regarding the motorcycle competitors.

But one bike that denied KTM from taking the top three positions was the Yamaha WR450 F Rally motorcycle piloted by Portugal's Helder Rodrigues.

The 32-year old battled intensely throughout the 33rd edition of the Dakar Rally, which took the riders almost 5,600 miles from Mar Del Plata, Argentina, through Chile to end in Lima, Peru. And when it was all said and done, Rodrigues would take the final podium position behind MRW Red Bull AMV KTM's Marc Coma, and race-winner, Red Bull KTM's Cyril Despres.

During the 2012 Dakar Rally, Rodrigues took two stage victories (9 and 13).

Helder Rodrigues (Yamaha WR450F) says: "Making it to the end of a Dakar is always terrific. So finishing on the podium is simply incredible. There are two great riders, Marc and Cyril, and they're tough nuts to crack.

"I lost 20 minutes in stage 4 and 20 more two days later. I was 40 minutes back, so I knew catching up with them would be hard. Winning the Dakar requires perfect preparation all year round and making sure everything goes well during the race. I'll try and find the solution to be as good as they are."

Rodrigues' 2012 result was a repeat of his 2011 podium finish, and in 2010, he finished fourth overall. Yamaha says the record - together with 2011 FIM Cross Countries Rally World Championship - establishes the Portuguese as one of the best rally specialists in the world.

As for other Yamaha riders in Dakar, the Japanese manufacturer says Olivier Pain snared his best stage result of the rally at the final time-of-asking - with sixth - that cemented his final ranking of 9th and means that Yamaha technology filled two spots at the higher echelon of the leaderboard. The Frenchman posted ten finishes in the top fifteen. David Casteu was hunting a slot in the first five for almost half of the rally but ran into some technical trouble and could never regain the ground he has worked hard to grasp. Pain's team-mate eventually rolled into Lima with the final position of 41st.

Also of note from the 2012 contest was Yamaha Dakar legend Stephane Peterhansel. The veteran put himself into the record books once more. The Frenchman won the car class of the rally for his tenth success. The win was his first in five years. "My finest victory will always be my first win in the motorcycle category, but this one has something special to it," the 46-year old said.

Team Courage Gazelles Announcement

January 17, 2012 by

Team Courage Gazelles regrets to announce that they will have to postpone their run for the Rallye Aicha des Gazelles in Morocco until 2013.  Unfortunately, team member Michele Martineau, a breast cancer previvor, must undergo surgery due to reconstruction complications.  Doctor?s are insisting that she not race for all of 2012, not only putting on hold the team?s Gazelle campaign, but also Michele?s goal of racing in 4 different countries this year.

TCG plans on using this bonus year to further their fundraising campaign for breast cancer research, expand their social networks, and form more partnerships.  A documentary is still a possibility and sponsor Soulside Network will remain on board.

?It?s heartbreaking to have to postpone our entry in the Gazelle Rally, and I never imagined I would have to take an entire year off,? Michele said of the news. ?I?m trying not to be overwhelmed by my upcoming surgeries, and focusing on getting through it and through physical therapy helps. And knowing that Emme, my team, and our supporters are behind me truly makes a difference?and my new tattoos help too.?

Team mate Emme Hall stands by Michele one hundred percent.  ?They say there are no friends in racing but I beg to differ.  I started this journey with Michele and I?ll be damned if I don?t finish it with her.  Am I disappointed?  Of course, but I?m excited to have another year to talk about Team Courage Gazelles and our mission to inspire women facing breast cancer to acknowledge their fear but not let it stop them from chasing their dreams.?

All 4 ladies from the umbrella team of Team Courage Racing, Heather Berger, Betsy Anderson, Emme, and Michele will be at the NORRA Mexican 1000, either racing it or working it and Emme will be skipping around different series this year in her newly purchased 2/1600.  ?If you see any of us out and about, please say hi!  We love chatting with people about Team Courage Racing?or just racing in general.?

You can keep up with Team Courage Gazelles on Facebook at www.facebook.com/teamcouragegazelles, twitter @couragegazelles, and on the web at www.teamcouragegazelles.com.

?So many racers have been so supportive of Team Courage as well as Courage Is My Strength,? says Michele.  ?Your support means the world to me. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.?

About Team Courage

Team Courage is a combination of 4 dynamic women racing to make a difference against breast cancer. Betsy, Emme, Heather, and Michele race as Team Courage in various off road sports, raising money for different breast cancer charities. Look for Team Courage everywhere you find powerful engines, dirt, and off road fun! www.teamcourageracing.com

About the Rallye Aicha des Gazelles

The Rallye Aicha des Gazelles is an all female, nine day rally through the harsh desert of Morocco using only traditional methods of navigation.  The Gazelles use outdated maps and a compass rather than GPS to find their way to checkpoints.  Points are awarded for shortest distance traveled rather than fastest time.  The rallye puts its strength and its image to the service of all through the Heart of Gazelles, a registered non-profit organization in existence since 2011.  The Heart of Gazelles works with the Moroccan government on projects such as providing access to medical care, building schools, and assisting with sustainable development.  More information can be found at www.rallyeaichadesgazelles.com
