Fri, 27 Jan 2012 22:18:33 -0800 OTSFF Sports Signs Richard Grey For 2012 MX Season http://terrydame9.posterous.com/otsff-sports-signs-richard-grey-for-2012-mx-s-72953 http://terrydame9.posterous.com/otsff-sports-signs-richard-grey-for-2012-mx-s-72953

From OTSFF

OTSFF Sports Marketing Group is pleased to announce the signing of Richard Grey to their 2012 CMRC Nationals motocross team.

The seven-time Canadian National Amateur Champion will join the team as Bobby Kiniry?s new teammate. Grey will campaign the MX2 class while Kiniry returns for his third season in the MX1 class, OTSFF?s Andre Laurin said.

?We?re excited to have Richard join our team because we believe he is at the forefront of a new generation of up-and-coming Canadian pro riders,? Laurin said. ?We?ve kept an eye on him for the past couple of years and have been impressed by his results as well as his professionalism on and off the track.?

Despite campaigning only the eastern leg of the MX2 Nationals in 2011, Grey garnered an 18th place ranking, with his best result being recorded at the final round of the season in Walton. On the strength of 9-3 motos, Grey hammered down third overall in the nearly impossible racing conditions on the rain and mud soaked Walton Raceway track.

The 18-year-old Keswick, ON native, who turned pro this year, has also won a truckload of Ontario Provincial Championships as well as placing top-five, including two moto wins, at Loretta Lynn?s in the U.S.

?I?m super pumped to be joining the OTSFF program and super excited to get the 2012 season going,? Grey said. ?This being my first major team, it?s a huge step for me to be taking and I know I?m in for a huge learning experience. I also know that I?m going to have to put all my effort forth to confirm the confidence Andre has shown in me.?

2012 AMA Supercross

Three different riders won the opening three rounds of the 2012 AMA Supercross Championship, displaying the wide amount of talent on this year's grid.

The season-opener at Anaheim went to the reigning AMA SX Champion, Monster Energy Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto, with Ryan Dungey taking the win at round two in Phoenix, the 2010 SX champion giving KTM its first-ever win in AMA Supercross.

And last weekend's race at Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, was taken by Chad Reed aboard his self-owned team with American Honda backing, Two-Two Motorsports. It was the Australian's 41st career victory.

But it's Dungey who has the overall points lead as the series heads into O.com Stadium Saturday in Oakland, Calif. The Red Bull KTM SX-F 450 rider is the only one to finish on the podium at all three rounds so far, and holds a four-point lead over Reed and Villopoto, who are tied with 63 points in second and third.

The other big threat to field will be two-time AMA Supercross Champion James Stewart. But the Joe Gibbs Racing Yamaha rider arrives in Oakland under some heartbreaking news; his mechanic, Mark "Tex" Adams, was killed after assisting a stranded motorists in Florida. Although the news is saddening, Stewart is expected to race Saturday at O.com.

The other big news as the series heads to Oakland is the first-lap crash last week in LA involving Muscle Milk Honda's Trey Canard and Valli Rockstar Yamaha's Ryan Morais. During the wreck, which brought out the red flag, Morais landed on Canard, sending both riders to the dirt.

Canard fractured his back, and underwent surgery, and Morais also suffered many injuries, including a broken jaw, fractured vertebrae and broken ribs.

When the race restarted at Dodger Stadium, it was Monster Energy Kawasaki's Jake Weimer who got the holeshot, but Reed moved into first on lap six, and was unstoppable.

Weimer would battle with Stewart, but both riders suffered small crashes, pushing them further back. Dungey would take second, and Stewart would regain his rhythm to take the final podium position.

There's a simliar story brewing in the Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites Class; so far there were also three different winners - Honda's Cole Seely (Anaheim I), Monster Kawasaki's Dean Wilson (Phoenix) and GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac (Los Angeles).

With his win in Dodger Stadium, Tomac went from fifth to first in Western Regional Lites class, one point ahead of Wilson. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Tyla Rattray, the points leader coming into Dodger Stadium, sits an additional two points back in third.

During last year's AMA Supercross return to Oakland, Stewart took the win, followed by Reed and Dungey, respectively. In the Western Regional Supercross Lites class, it would be Broc Tickle who took the win enroute to his 2011 AMA SX Lites title.

The first race was held in Oakland on January 18, 1979, and Jimmy Weinert won on a Kawasaki. Last year was the first inaugural Supercross Lites class race at O.co Coliseum.

Round 3 of the 2012 AMA Supercross Championship at O.com Stadium in Oakland will be broadcast on CBS at noon (EDT) Sunday, Jan. 29.

Lucas Oil / TLD / Honda's Christian Craig will miss much of the remaining supercross series to repair a broken wrist. The scaphoid bone (navicular) in his left wrist was fractured at the Southwick Motocross National and he had surgery to screw the broken bone. Unfortunately, the bone never healed properly and he will have to have it corrected.

MX Sports Pro Racing and Alli Sports announce that the brand new Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park will become the new home of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, in Southern California. On the heels of announcing the 2012 series schedule and advance ticket sales for next summer, both parties are pleased to welcome the completely renovated Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park as the host site of the season finale, set to take place on Saturday, September 8, 2012.

Located in the hotbed of the motocross industry, and about an hour outside of the major metropolitan areas of Los Angeles and San Diego, Lake Elsinore serves as an ideal location for fans of the sport across the entire southern portion of the state. It's also well-known to students of the sport's history as the site of the Lake Elsinore Grand Prix, which was featured prominently in the epic motorcycle racing documentary film On Any Sunday back in 1971 - one year before the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship was born.

Fri, 27 Jan 2012 01:18:33 -0800 Building a CNC Milling Machine the Hard Way http://terrydame9.posterous.com/building-a-cnc-milling-machine-the-hard-way http://terrydame9.posterous.com/building-a-cnc-milling-machine-the-hard-way

CNC conversion for a standard milling machineCurrent CNC milling machines have dramatically advanced what a builder can create from a simple block of metal, and as we've seen, a properly programmed high end mill can turn out amazing work. Home machinists and builders often make do with more basic equipment allowing them to make those special one off parts or even a series of parts, but if you start with a basic milling machine and then get the urge to do CNC work, you have to make a choice, trade it in for a factory built CNC machine, buy some sort of add on kit or design and build everything necessary and convert it yourself. Though the last route is a bit over the top, Joel Miller of Massachusetts, an industrial designer by day, decided to see what it would take to do just that and forged ahead.

Joel bought a Grizzly G0704, a manual machine of the type you might find in a home shop, and set it up in his garage. After getting the feel of it and seeing what it could do, he launched into the conversion, buying parts, metal enclosures, stepper motors, switches and wiring and even designing and etching his own printed circuit boards.

He has a detailed series of posts on his website describing the whole process finishing with some videos of the machine in action, definitely worth your time. I can imagine someone seeing the CNC mill in his garage and assuming it was something he bought as a complete outfit, never imagining he did so much of the work himself. This is "hands on" on a higher level. Nice job!

Thu, 26 Jan 2012 19:18:34 -0800 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series, an FIM World Championship officially underway - Anaheim Recap, Phoenix Preview http://terrydame9.posterous.com/2012-monster-energy-ama-supercross-series-an-3979 http://terrydame9.posterous.com/2012-monster-energy-ama-supercross-series-an-3979

As the series heads into round two at Phoenix, Arizona?s Chase Field, potential title contenders have already begun to establish themselves. At Anaheim I, Monster Energy Kawasaki?s Ryan Villopoto walked away with the season kickoff win in the Supercross Class, while Cole Seely captured the Supercross Lites victory for Lucas Oil / Troy Lee Designs / Honda.

Stats and data below courtesy Feld Motor Sports

Villopoto was clearly the fastest rider on the track, and was the only rider during the main to lay down lap times under 1:01. When the checkered flag waved, Ryan was more than 12 seconds ahead of second place finisher Chad Reed of TwoTwo Motorsports/Honda. But the fight for second was the best skirmish of the night. JGR/Toyota/Yamaha?s James Stewart got a mid pack start and was forced to work his way up, while Villopoto, Reed, and Red Bull/KTM?s Ryan Dungey began up front.

Stewart was eventually able to make his way up to Dungey in third, and that?s when things got interesting. The two riders battled back and forth, forcing each other into various mistakes, but Reed made an error on his own, allowing Dungey and Stewart to close the gap. Just as Stewart was gaining on Reed, the JGR rider made yet another mistake, and landed on top of a tuff block in an on/off section, resulting in a crash.

Just shown at the European Bike Expo, this custom Moto Guzzi Griso from Ipothesys looks very well done, and like any well designed Guzzi should, it puts the visual focus right on the engine with minimal body work to hide the mechanicals. I'm guessing some sort of kit is planned so you can do this yourself, but I don't have any more info just yet, we'll see what we can find.

Thanks for the tip, Doug!

Chad Reed earned his 41st Supercross Class win

Reed has now won a Supercross Class race in nine career seasons and is tied with Jeremy McGrath on the all-time list

Ryan Dungey is the only rider to be on the podium at all three races; he?s finished 3-1-2.

For the first time ever, KTM has been in the Supercross Class points lead (this doesn?t include last week?s tie)

For the 11th time in Supercross class history, there have been three different winners in the first three rounds

Three different brands, Kawasaki, KTM and Honda have now won a Supercross Class race this year. If Yamaha and Suzuki can get a win, it will be the first time in Supercross class history that every manufacturer has won a Supercross Class Main Event.

Brett Metcalfe earned a season-best fifth place

James Stewart broke his four race non-podium streak with a third in Los Angeles. He can break his five-race non-win streak with a win this weekend.

All five brands were in the top five in Los Angeles: Honda: KTM, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki. On March 19, 1977, there were seven different brands in the top 10: Can-am, Honda, Maico, Yamaha, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, and Suzuki.

There has been a different winner at each of the first three races in the Supercross and the Supercross Lites classes: Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Dungey, Chad Reed, Cole Seely, Dean Wilson, and Eli Tomac. This is the third time this has happened since the Lites class started in 1985. (1986 & 1993)

For the second straight week, Monster Energy Kawasaki?s Villopoto worked back from nearly last place to a fourth-place finish

Monster Energy/Pro-Circuit/Kawasaki?s Broc Tickle finished a career-best eighth place, just a week after failing to qualify for the Main Event in Phoenix

Davi Millsaps earned a season-best sixth place

Josh Hansen earned his best finish of the season with a seventh

Thu, 26 Jan 2012 01:18:36 -0800 Edwards: CRT bikes will surprise people http://terrydame9.posterous.com/edwards-crt-bikes-will-surprise-people http://terrydame9.posterous.com/edwards-crt-bikes-will-surprise-people

COLIN EDWARDS has said that for CRT bikes to be competitive they must first control the power delivery but once this is managed they will began to surprise people.

Explaining the point he made after signing with the NGM Forward Racing squad - saying that the CRT bikes will surprise some people at certain tracks - Edwards told the official MotoGP website: "In a perfect world, if I had a motorcycle with 250HP that did everything I wanted it to, yes, I believe CRT bikes would surprise people at some particular tracks.

"The only question now is: will this 250HP be deliverable? Until we get that sorted and can ride the bike to the limit, then we are going to struggle. When we get to that point, then yes, I do believe the CRT bikes will surprise some people at some of the tracks."

The main element holding back the collection of CRT bikes on the grid is the electronics package, according to Edwards he can only ride the Suter-BMW at 65 per cent because the electronics are not like anything 'that he is accustomed to and they aren't consistent enough', but the Texan acknowledges that the bike has potential.

"Anytime we made even a little change to the electronics, it made the bike better as an overall package, even though we never changed any geometry settings," said Edwards. "Anytime you make the electronics better you make the bike better. I wasn?t even at a point where I could say, 'OK the chassis needs this, the swingarm needs that,' because we couldn?t get there.

"Until you can ride the bike at 100 percent, you are going to go in circles if you start changing things. You first need to fix the electronics, that is the main thing."

MotoGP testing resumes at Sepang on January 31st, the scene of the tragic accident that claimed the life of Marco Simoncelli. Edwards was involved in the crash and said his return to the Malaysian circuit will be emotional but added that it was important to get back on track.

The Texan continued: "I?m not worried about what kind of gap there will be; I?m more worried about being able to ride the hell out of a motorcycle. If I?m held back by electronics or something, then that is where we need to work.

"I?m going out there and ride the bike as fast as I possibly can and see what happens. If I had to give a number, I?d be really happy with a time of 2?03 or 2?02. Can we do that? I?ll just have to wait and see."

Well, as long as we're on the subject of electrics, here's a new one from Brutus Electric Motorcycles. This one has a lot less of the enviro-geek look we see too much of and instead appears to be a massaged and somewhat portly Ducati Monster. Yes, it could be cleaned up a little, but it actually looks pretty cool.

The DC motor runs on lithium polymer batteries and sends power through a 5 speed gearbox. The bike has a 100+ mile range when ridden aggressively according to builder, Chris Bell.

The bike shown here is Brutus 2, the second iteration of the design and it looks to be pretty nicely done. Interesting.
